Waste and recycling guidance

From the 1st January 2011 there will be three new approved waste contractors who will be our partners in developing our waste and recycling solutions, they are:
- Wastecycle – a Nottingham based company who have a strong ethos towards reducing and recycling waste and who will be working with us to increase our recycling rate from the current campus average of just under 30% (compared to national average of 38%). Wastecycle will be taking all our general waste, recyclable materials, such as paper, cardboard, plastics, cans, metal and wood, as well as bulky items and confidential waste.
- SecondByte – a charitable company based in Scunthorpe who will be taking all our Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) as well as bulbs and batteries.
- Greenability – a Lincolnshire based company who will be taking imago’s food waste for anaerobic digestion.
These new contractors are the only University Approved contractors for these waste streams and to ensure legal compliance are the only contractors which can therefore be used for these streams. For further details on legal compliance please click here »
We look forward to the support of departments as we drive towards reducing, reusing and recycling our waste to divert it from landfill, decreasing our costs and increasing value for money through improved and consolidated waste management practices whilst ensuring legal compliance.
Waste Process - General waste:
Bins are provided in and around offices for general waste but these bins will generally be emptied just once a week. Any food which is either purchased or brought on to the premises should be disposed of in the kitchen bins which will be emptied more frequently and not the general waste bins. The following recycling opportunities exist however to help you minimise the general waste which we send to landfill. Landfill costs are increasing at in excess of £8 per tonne per year which is significantly above inflation and every 1824Kg we send to landfill equates to 1 tonne of carbon added to the atmosphere.

Waste Process - Recycling:
Recycling should now be a part of our daily routines and your co-operation in continuing this routine whilst in the work place is essential if we are to meet our recycling targets and reduction in carbon emissions.

Hazardous and Clinical Waste
Please note that hazardous chemical waste and clinical waste is collected at regular intervals from various locations on campus. There is no charge for hazardous waste disposal but waste must be booked into the stores in advance. Please contact Cathy Moore on 222180 if you need to dispose of waste chemicals.
Recycling and General Waste in Halls of Residence
If you live in an imago, UPP or Unite hall, your recycling is collected by Charnwood Borough Council. In your kitchens you will have a bin with a purple bag for recycling, a bin with a clear bag for general waste, a green or grey box for glass bottles/jars and a small box for broken glass.
