EcoCampus – Environmental Management System

This is a sector specific tool for implementation which offers procedural support and the ability to create a formal environmental management system that is measurable and continual addressing key issues of environmental sustainability.
It is a whole package and provides a system that helps you identify any gaps and then set objectives and targets that can be measured and improved upon.
EcoCampus is an operational tool and will help improve performance day to day. As a national Environmental Management System and award scheme for the higher education sector the scheme allows universities to be recognised for addressing key issues of environmental sustainability.
It aligns with ISO 14001 and BS8555 the British Guidance Standard as well as providing a substantial amount of evidence required for the Universities that Count BiTC index.
The scheme is broken down into four phases. As the University meets the criteria of each stage an award ranging from Bronze to Platinum will be achieved.

EcoCampus award
In September 2011, Loughborough University achieved the Silver EcoCampus award for the phased implementation of an Environmental Management System.
To achieve Silver the University has provided evidence of a fully published Environmental Policy, has assessed its’ significant environmental impacts, has produced objectives and targets to deliver continual environmental improvement and has reviewed legal compliance related to environmental management.
This achievement means we now have an externally audited and accredited Environmental Management System in place giving cohesion to the excellent work going on across the many disciplines on campus that feed into the sustainability strategy. As this is an operational system we will be expected to show continual improvement and the next phase is Gold which the University will begin working towards in 2012.
