You can also search direct on NHS Choices at http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx

Expert advice from your local pharmacy

There is a pharmacy on campus and numerous pharmacies in and around Loughborough.

Care and treatment from your GP

Under current regulations, anyone who comes to the UK to pursue a full-time course of study of more than six months’ duration, will be fully entitled to free NHS services (which includes GP services). This exemption will apply to your spouse, civil partner and children (under the age of 16, or 19 if in further education) if they are living permanently with you in the UK for the duration of your course.

There is a GP practice (University Medical Centre) on campus which will accept registrations from all Loughborough University students provided they live within a 3 mile radius of the campus. To register, please attend the medical centre to complete a registration form. Please note that you will need to bring your student card to confirm that you are a current Loughborough University student.

The University medical centre is open from 08.00-5.30 pm from Monday to Friday and provides a range of GP and nurse appointments. In addition the medical centre also offers a variety of clinics to meet students needs. It is advisable to register with the medical centre if you have a chronic illness such as asthma or diabetes so that they can provide repeat prescriptions for inhalers, insulin etc. For appointment or clinic times please call 0845 045 0557 or visit http://www.lboro.ac.uk/service/medcentre/index.htm

The University medical centre also provides a walk-in service, open 9am – 12.00pm and 1.30pm - 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. All patients are seen and treated by an experienced nurse and if deemed clinically necessary the nurse will refer the patient to the duty doctor.

Please note that the services provided are that of a regular GP practice, therefore if you have a serious injury / illness or life threatening condition please go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department or call 999 for an ambulance.

Alternatively, if you would like a list of GPs, or have any registration queries, please call NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland Patient Registration and Screening Services on 0116 295 7880.

Or you can find GP practice details by searching on the NHS Choices website at http://www.nhs.uk/ServiceDirectories/Pages/ServiceSearch.aspx

Loughborough NHS Walk-in Centre

Pinfold Gate, Loughborough,

Telephone: 01509 553998

Loughborough NHS Walk-In Centre provides treatment for minor injuries and illness. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is staffed by experienced nurses. Patients don’t usually need to make an appointment, but please see the note about out-of-hours consultations with a GP at the bottom of this section.

The Walk-in Centre is for urgent but not emergency care and does not provide repeat prescriptions e.g. for inhalers, routine contraception or insulin. It is not an Emergency Department and should not be used as a way to bypass making a routine appointment with your GP practice.

The Walk-In Centre deals with:

  • Sore throats, earache

  • Bites and stings

  • Minor breaks

  • Minor cuts and wounds

  • Muscle and joint injuries

  • Suturing (stitches)

  • Skin complaints – rashes and skin infections

  • Minor eye injuries – problems such as foreign bodies and conjunctivitis

  • Urinary infections – e.g. cystitis, and women’s health problems such as thrush

On arrival all patients are assessed by an experienced nurse to determine the urgency of the problem and which clinician can assess and treat it. You will then be asked to wait for a clinician to become available. It is not always necessary for you to be seen and treated by a doctor as nursing staff are trained to assess and treat minor illnesses and injuries.

The Walk-in Centre does not provide care for overdoses, neck injuries, stab wounds, chest wounds, multiple injuries, life threatening injuries, dislocated joints or provide dental treatment.

OUT OF HOURS - Please note: If you if you need to be seen by our on-call GP out of hours, the walk-in centre operates an appointments system, weekdays 6.30pm-8pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. You can arrange an appointment through the out-of-hours service by calling your GP practice or, if you are not registered with a GP, calling direct on 0845 045 0411. The out-of-hours triage team can arrange the most appropriate care.
