Unwanted E-mail
Unwanted / Spam / Junk E-mail
Between 70% and 90% of all e-mail on the Internet, and all e-mail sent to the University, is junk e-mail / unsolicited advertising (also known as "spam"). IT Services undertakes considerable work to automatically filter e-mail so that e-mail which is definitely unwanted is not delivered to your Inbox, and indeed it is stopped at the earliest stage we can before it even arrives at the Exchange e-mail server.
Beyond this, Exchange has further rules for dealing with e-mail which is probably unwanted. This e-mail is placed in a special folder called Junk E-mail. You can still open it, delete it, or if it actually isn't unwanted, move it back to your Inbox or any other mail folder. For those using the Outlook e-mail client, or Outlook Web Access, there are additional facilities.
Junk E-mail and Outlook
If you find a piece of e-mail which is not junk, select the e-mail, right-click and select Mark As Not Junk, or press Ctrl+Alt+J. Mac users (Outlook 2011) select Junk and then Mark as Not Junk from the ribbon. The e-mail will be restored.

You can choose to Always trust e-mail from the sender of the e-mail, or not. If you do choose to Always trust, any new e-mails purporting to be from that sender will never be moved to the Junk E-mail folder.
If you right-click any e-mail in any folder and select Junk E-mail from the pop-up menu, then the following options are available:
- Add Sender to Blocked Senders List
- Add Sender to Safe Senders List
- Add Sender's Domain (e.g. @example.com) to Safe Senders List
- Add Recipient to Safe Recipients List
- Mark As Not Junk (greyed out unless this is the Junk E-mail folder)
- Junk E-mail Options
