International Web Addresses

Introduction

This page shows you the steps you need to take to visit web sites which use International characters in their web addresses e.g. http://拉夫堡大学.com/ (http://拉夫堡大学.com/). These are called IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names).

LUNET/Exchange users can proceed to the section entitled Add Particular Languages to Internet Explorer.

Change Language Settings for your computer

You must be logged in to an account with Administrative rights.

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Regional and Language Options.

  3. Select the Languages tab.

    Regional and Language Options.

  4. Under Supplemental language support ensure that both Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai) and Install files for East Asian languages are selected.

  5. As you click the Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai) checkbox, the following screen will be displayed:

    Install Supplemental Language Support.

    Click OK.

  6. As you click the Install files for East Asian languages checkbox, t he following screen will be displayed:

    Install Supplemental Language Support.

    Click OK.

  7. Click Apply.

  8. The following screen will be displayed, asking if you wish to restart your computer:

    Change Regional Options.

    Click Yes.

Modify Internet Explorer International Settings

You must be logged in with your normal user account for the remaining steps.

  1. Start Internet Explorer.

  2. Press Alt to see the menu, then select Tools then Internet options.

  3. Select the Advanced tab.

  4. Under Settings scroll down to International. Select all of the checkboxes, i.e.:

    • Always show encoded addresses.

    • Send IDN server names.

    • Send IDN server names for Intranet addresses.

    • Send UTF-8 URLs.

    • Show Information Bar for encoded addresses.

    • Use UTF-8 for mailto links.

    Click Apply.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Close Internet Explorer. You must close Internet Explorer for the changes to take place.

Add Particular Languages to Internet Explorer

You must be logged in with your normal user account for the remaining steps.

  1. Start Internet Explorer.

    Press Alt to see the menus. Select Tools then Internet Options.

    Ensure that the General tab is selected.

  2. Click the Languages button.

    The Language Preference dialogue will be displayed:

    Language Preference.

  3. Click the Add button.

    The Add Language dialogue will be displayed:

    Add Language.

  4. Select from the Language list and click OK.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Click OK.

Alternate Instructions for adding a Language to Internet Explorer

You must be logged in with your normal user account for the remaining steps.

When you browse the web you may find when you visit a foreign language web site that the following is displayed:

Information Bar.

You can click on Close.

The information bar will still be displayed:

If this contains This web address contains letters or symbols that cannot be displayed with the current language settings. Click here for options..., then you need to add a language.

Right-click and select Change language settings.

The Language Preference dialogue will be displayed as step 2 above; continue as above.

Note:

Web addresses with foreign characters will be displayed in the address bar as http://xn-something.
