Physical Egonomics

ThermofluidsBased within the Department of Human Sciences Physical Ergonomics consists of two key areas:

Environmental Ergonomics

The Environmental Ergonomics Cluster studies the interaction of humans with their physical environment.  Main areas of interest are: noise and vibration (eg vibration in commercial vehicles), vision and lighting (eg eye function and parameters defining perception of lighting); and the thermal environment (heat and cold stress, comfort, protective and performance clothing). The cluster's research is currently expanding into the area of multimodal stimuli (eg human response to vibration in the cold).  Researchers in the cluster publish widely and play a lead role in standardisation work.  The cluster has a high level of research income per head, from EPSRC, HSE, EU, MOD and industry.

Ergonomics, Work & Health

The Ergonomics, Work and Health cluster is concerned with promoting safe, healthy and productive interactions between people and the contexts in which they work and live. Current research is concerned with promoting health and safety, in both workplace and domestic settings; managing chronic health conditions at work; organisational systems and safety; physical ergonomics, soldier mobility and load carriage; hospital ergonomics and patient safety; and design of inclusive environments. The cluster has an excellent track record of attracting external funding, from across a range of research council, government, charity and commercial sponsors.
