Engineering Research

Centres

CentresResearch Centres and Institutes have been developed to provide particular strengths in specialised topic areas. Whilst research forms the central activity of most of these centres, some offer other services including teaching and consultancy.

Engineering Research Centres and Institutes based at Loughborough include:

  • Centre for Biological Engineering
The Centre for Biological Engineering (CBE) aims to build new capability and capacity in biological engineering. The CBE brings together world-class researchers in the fields of healthcare engineering, cell technologies and bioelectrics engineering, all working within the translational space between scientific discovery and products, processes, techniques and therapies.

  • Centre for Mobile Communications Research
Established in 1998 the Centre specialises in antennas and associated devices for mobile telephony in GSM, GPS, UMTS, UWB, BluetoothTM and WLAN applications.
  • Centre for Innovative and Collaborative Engineering
While originally named the Centre for Innovative Construction Engineering, due a broadening of the Centre's remit in 2005 it re-launched itself under its new name. CICE is now able to make EngD studentships available to ALL areas of Engineering andApplied Science.
  • Centre of Excellence in Customised Assembly
CECA is an industry driven facility that supports manufacturers in developing new ways of assembling products, making the most of intelligent systems to maximise efficiency and guarantee quality.
  • European Construction Institute
ECI was founded in 1990 to create a collaborative forum for some of the largest, most prestigious clients, contractors and project support organisations in Europe to work together. This is an organisation expressly driven by, and for, its membership.
  • Innovative Electronics Manufacturing Research Centre IeMRC is one of 16 Innovative Manufacturing Research Centres (IMRCs) set up and supported by the EPSRC, focussing on the electronics manufacturing sector. Other UK universities involved in the operation of the Centre include Bath, Brunel, Greenwich, Lancaster, Sheffield and Strathclyde.
  • Innovative Manufacturing & Construction Research Centre
The Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre brings together a multi-disciplinary group undertaking leading-edge collaborative research to enhance the processes, products, and competitiveness of the UK's manufacturing and construction industries. As the largest of the EPSRC centres its scope is wide, covering aspects of technology, business and organisational performance, and human factors.
  • Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre
The Centre’s primary aim is to support materials research in the University as a whole. Supporting industry by providing specialist services is also seen as a very important part of LMCC’s activities.
  • Systems Engineering Doctorate Centre
Located at Loughborough University, the centre is a consortium involving four other institutions, the University of Bath, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Leicester and the University of Strathclyde.

  • UK Doctoral Training Centre in Energy Demand Reduction and the Built Environment
The Centre is a collaboration between University College London (UCL) and Loughborough University. Funded by EPSRC, the Centre aims to support the training and research of highly skilled and broadly educated energy researchers to lead and support the complex, multidisciplinary task of driving down energy demand and CO2 emissions of the UK building stock.
  • Water, Engineering and Development Centre
WEDC is one of the world's leading institutions concerned with education, training, research, and consultancy relating to the planning, provision, and management of infrastructure for development in low- and middle-income countries.
