Short courses

Keeping up to date

Studying a short course at Loughborough brings you particular advantages, such as strengthened career-development, updated technological skills, enhanced professional competence and improved employability. We offer both standard short courses and bespoke short courses for companies. Short courses run from one to five days duration.

Standard Short Courses

All of the Engineering Faculty's modules can be studied as standard short courses, without assessment. Consequently you will complete about 50 hours of study for a typical short course. Each course will include a full set of study notes plus some extra reading material if you wish to study further. If you enrol onto a short course you do have the option to carry out the coursework and exam. This would then give you typically 10 credits towards a certificate, diploma or MSc - this usually equates to another 50 hours of study. View our short course calendar.

Bespoke Short Courses

The Engineering Faculty has considerable experience of working with industry to provide postgraduate engineering education and has an extensive list of corporate clients. Our experience ranges from providing individual short courses tailored to meet the needs of specific engineering companies to complete postgraduate programmes designed for larger organisations. Please contact one of the people listed in our contacts section, who will then put you in touch with an academic member of staff so you can discuss your enquiry in detail.

Studying Individual Modules

If you do not wish to enrol onto a postgraduate programme straight away or if you wish to use modules to gain academic credit only, you can elect to study any of the Engineering Faculty's modules.

Most modules have either a 10 or 15 credit weighting, where 10 credits equates roughly to a total of 100 hours of study. Assessment is usually through a combination of coursework and written examination. Most modules are taught during one week at times specified by a timetable for the academic year. Some modules may be studied entirely through distance learning.

As with our postgraduate programmes, you can decide to use your module credits towards a postgraduate qualification for up to 8 years. Alternatively, you can choose to have a transcript detailing the credits you have accumulated.
