Physics with Mathematics

The Physics with Mathematics course provides you with the opportunity to develop the skills and competences needed to teach Physics to the 11-18 age range, as well as Mathematics to the 11-16 age range. You will be encouraged to review and develop your own personal subject knowledge and its application in relation to the National Curriculum, develop your confidence and knowledge of teaching and assessment methods, and improve your classroom management and organisational skills. Throughout this process, you will be encouraged to develop a self-critical and reflective approach towards your teaching.  On teaching practice, whilst your teaching of Mathematics will be monitored and developed, formal assessments will predominantly focus on your teaching of Physics.

You will have the opportunity to explore the potential of Information and Communication Technology, which has become an important and integral part of both Physics and Mathematics education in recent years. You will discover how pupils can make appropriate use of technology for remote sensing, data capture and analysis as well as the presentation of results and ideas and how it provides teachers with a wide range of opportunities for the preparation and presentation of teaching materials and resources.

You will be encouraged and supported to review and revise National Curriculum content and resources in Physics and Mathematics with which you feel less confident and competent, thus developing your overall knowledge and skills profile in preparation for teaching Physics and Mathematics in schools.

Applicants with a degree in any Physics or Physics-related discipline (e.g. engineering) are eligible to apply.  Applicants must have an A level (or equivalent) in Mathematics.  Mature students who have relevant commercial or industrial experience are particularly welcome to apply.

In order to become a specialist teacher of Physics, your degree should contain at least 50% Physics.  If, however, it does not, you will be required to successfully complete a funded, full time six months Physics Enhancement Course (PEC), which is delivered January to June 2013. The PEC course is designed for Science graduates with some Physics background (A-level or work-related, for example) who, would not otherwise be able to train to be a Physics specialist.  Further information on the PEC can be found on the TEU home page.

Physics trainees with a 2:1 or First class degree are able to apply for an Institute of Physics scholarship worth £20,000. Trainees who hold a scholarship will not also be eligible for the standard Department for Education bursary. Physics trainees who are not awarded the scholarship will continue in 2012/13 to be eligible for the standard £20,000 bursary for those with a First class degree, and £15,000 bursary for those with a 2:1degree.
