Communication and Media Studies
Career Prospects
Communications and media are among the fastest-growing areas of employment. The degree gives you a through knowledge of how communications and media operate and the theories and methods used to analyse them. The course will also help you develop a range of more general skills including problem solving, working with people and developing your own projects. By the end of the degree you should be able to: examine and evaluate problems; know how to retrieve relevant information and gather new data; analyse and interpret results; present your conclusions cogently in written and oral form on time; and identify options for further action. You should also be able to work confidently and competently both alone and in groups.
These skills, together with your detailed knowledge of communications and the media, will be relevant to a wide variety of jobs. These include public, voluntary and private sector positions in journalism, public relations, market research, advertising, etc. A good social science degree is also relevant for a whole range of other careers within industry, government, the professions and other arenas. For certain jobs you may need a postgraduate or professional qualification. The University Careers Service will offer guidance on the available options and will assist you in finding a satisfying career.
