Overview

The Department has an academic staff of approximately 20 and a postgraduate community of about 30. Our teaching and research ratings confirm that we are one of the UK's foremost centres in the field. Teaching and research supervision is provided by leading academics of international renown, and we have an enviable PhD completion rate. An excellent library, IT facilities and an extensive international network of partner institutions make the Department an ideal environment for postgraduate work.

The Department has been recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council for research training, both for '1+3' and for '+3' students. Potential applicants for ESRC studentships are welcomed.

Our fields of Research

Research in the Department of Politics, History and International Relations is focused into four broad groupings: European Union and area studies, Modern History, International Relations and Political Theory.

Departmental support and training for research students

All research students are provided with:

  1. a work-space with computer in a shared research student office
  2. photocopying and inter-library loan facilities
  3. financial support to participate in conference and other research-related activities, and where possible to assist with the costs of field work
  4. supervisor(s) with expertise in the selected research area and an independent internal reviewer to oversee progress
  5. access to other departmental academic staff as appropriate

All research students are expected to:

  1. live and work in the vicinity of the Department
  2. attend regular departmental research seminars addressed by academic staff research students and invited speakers
  3. present at least one seminar paper to the Department at the end of the first year of research
  4. participate in event and activities organised by particular research clusters
  5. attend training courses throughout their PhD to support their research activities
Where possible the Department provides opportunities for PhD
students to assist in undergraduate teaching.
