Funding and Scholarships

The Economic & Social Research Council

The ESRC offers studentships on a competitive basis to UK/EU applicants wishing to take an MA/MSc followed by a PhD (the so-called ‘1+3’ studentship) and for those who already have a Masters and who wish to undertake a PhD (the so-called ‘+3’ studentships). These are fully funded for UK students, but cover fees only for non-UK citizens of the EU. (Note, however, that the criteria for determining status involve an element of residency, not just nationality.) Applications for the competition are usually open in March and the Department is able to nominate one applicant for consideration. For further details, click here. The ESRC provides support for research in political economy, the social sciences, political science and international relations.  Please note: competition for ESRC awards is extremely fierce and applicants are encouraged to contact the Department as soon as awards are announced for advice.

Loughborough Studentships

In addition to supporting applications for ESRC studentships, the Department is usually in a position to offer one fully funded University studentship and one Faculty Studentship each spring. The application deadline is usually in April, and you must normally have already been offered a place before applying. These studentships cover fees (at the UK/EU level) and a maintenance grant for three years. These studentships are only open to UK/EU students.

Other

From time to time the University announces additional studentship competitions.
