Yu SUN is a PhD Researcher in the Photonics Engineering and Health Care Technology Group. His research focuses on opto-physiological assessment and modeling especially the physiological and clinical applications in the aortic compliance.
The use of optical techniques in biomedical monitoring and diagnosis is becoming increasingly widespread. Amongst these, photoplethysmography (PPG) is a simple and low-cost optical technique that can be used to detected blood volume changes in the microvascular bed of tissue. It is commonly used non-invasively to take measurements at the skin surface to monitor the cardiovascular pulse wave/blood oxygenation and for the diagnosis of numerous vascular disorders. However, traditional PPG measurements always require the contact to the tissue which is unacceptable for some circumstances, e.g., burn/ulcer healing evaluation. Hence, a comparative remote PPG assessment technique would offer added valuable information for the clinical assessment.
