Chinthana read Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University and was awarded the MEng (Hons) degree in 2000. He also holds a Diploma in Industrial Studies through his placement at GEC-Marconi Electro-Optics. Chinthana completed his PhD on transmission line switching and frequency shifting in dipole antennas using optically activated silicon switches in 2005, also at Loughborough University.
As a Research Associate at Loughborough University, Chinthana developed a low SAR (Specific absorption Rate) dielectrically loaded antenna for mobile phones. In 2007, he joined the Electronic and Electrical Engineering department as a fulltime member of staff becoming a lecturer in Photonic Systems.
Chinthana is in the Systems division and works closely with the Control Systems research group and the Centre for Mobile Communications Research. Currently he is investigating the effects of semi-rimmed and rim-less metallic spectacles on the microwave energy absorbed in the head when using communications enabled PDA type devices in front of the face.
He is also investigating the packaging aspects of optically activated semiconductor switches and their use in planar microwave antennas
