Looking outward for practical answers to real-world problems.

In the last decade, the School has become increasingly and strategically focussed on augmenting and passing on knowledge in three critical areas of modern day life: Communications, Energy and Systems.

Communications - From mobile telecoms to secure internet technologies and complex image and signal processing, our solutions are commonly exploited by our industry partners.
Energy - We’re working on the development of secure and sustainable energy supplies for industry, homes and commerce, and new energy applications in medicine, aerospace, defence and the food industry.
Systems - As technology solutions become ever more complex, our cutting-edge systems engineering work focuses upon the effective integration of people, processes, tools and technology in order to improve the development of new, innovative products.

In each of these areas, the School has established a formidable and well-deserved international reputation: rated ‘World Class’ in the Sunday Times University Guide 2007. Confirming this, 95% of our research was rated of an international standard in the 2008 UK research assessment. This richness enhances and keeps our taught curriculum up to date while important results from our research are presented annually in over one hundred international conference and academic journal publications.

Supporting us and helping to ensure that our output reaches and benefits society at large are our very strong partnerships with many of the leading British and global technical organisations.
