Undergraduate study

English and Sports Science

Swimming Championships

This Joint Honours programme gives students the opportunity to encounter two exciting and challenging disciplines. Half of your time will be spent studying modules in English and the other half modules in Sports and Exercise Science. While each discipline has its distinctive subjects and approaches, you will also discover productive connections and overlaps between them (as when your study of the gender imagery of sports stars such as David Beckham and Andrew Flintoff proves invaluable in discussing constructions of masculinity in the contemporary English novel).

On the Sports Science side of your degree in the first year (Part A), you will take 'Analysis and Performance in Sport' as a compulsory module in both semesters, together with a number of optional modules; on the English side, you will put in place a strong basis for your subsequent literary studies by taking 'Critical Studies 1' and 'Critical Studies 2', together with a mix of other compulsory and optional elements. In the second year (Part B), 'Analysis and Performance in Sport' continues alongside optional modules as a compulsory Sports Science strand in both semesters; on the English side, meanwhile, you will choose between either 'British Drama 1576 - 1737' or 'Victorian Literature', leaving you forty credits of options to choose.

The third year (Part C) offers students on this programme a completely free choice. On the Sports Science side you can choose from modules that range from 'Sports Tourism' to 'Sport, The Body and Deviance'; in English your possibilities are many, and extend from 'The Novel in Russia' and 'Virginia Woolf' to 'America at War' and 'Contemporary Irish Texts'.
